John 18:19-24
Jesus Is Questioned
(Matthew 26.59-66; Mark 14.55-64; Luke 22.66-71)
19The high priest questioned Jesus about his followers and his teaching. 20But Jesus told him, “I have spoken freely in front of everyone. And I have always taught in our synagogues and in the temple, where all of our people come together. I have not said anything in secret. 21Why are you questioning me? Why don't you ask the people who heard me? They know what I have said.”
22As soon as Jesus said this, one of the temple police hit him and said, “That's no way to talk to the high priest!”
23Jesus answered, “If I have done something wrong, say so. But if not, why did you hit me?” 24Jesus was still tied up, and Annas sent him to Caiaphas the high priest.
John 18:19-24
The high priest questions Jesus
19Meanwhile, the high priest questioned Jesus about his disciples and his teaching.
20‘I have spoken openly to the world,’ Jesus replied. ‘I always taught in synagogues or at the temple, where all the Jews come together. I said nothing in secret. 21Why question me? Ask those who heard me. Surely they know what I said.’
22When Jesus said this, one of the officials near by slapped him in the face. ‘Is this the way you answer the high priest?’ he demanded.
23‘If I said something wrong,’ Jesus replied, ‘testify as to what is wrong. But if I spoke the truth, why did you strike me?’ 24Then Annas sent him bound to Caiaphas the high priest.
