About Us
The Auslan Bible Translation Project began in 1997. Since that time, the Auslan Bible Committee have been leading the project, working in partnership with Bible Society Australia who provide translation expertise and financial support. In 2023 Wycliffe Australia joined the project and is now also involved in supporting our translation work.
Our goal is, and has always been, to translate the Bible into a style of Auslan most widely understood by first language users. It is important to us that our translation is:
- Accurate – that means that the message of the original scriptures is communicated in an integral manner,
- Natural – that means the signing should look like every day Auslan and include all the features of the language, and
- Clear – that means that people should be able to easily understand what is being signed.
In our translation work, we make sure that the message communicated matches what was written in the original Hebrew and Greek scriptures, using the translation texts recommended by the United Bible Societies translation guidelines.
The Auslan Bible Project team is committed to translating more of the Bible into Auslan so that Deaf people can have access to God’s word in their first language.
